18th Century London audiences couldn’t get enough of Handel’s pastoral opera, Acis and Galatea. First performed in 1718, by the middle of the century it had been staged no less than seventy times. Based on Ovid’s Metamorphosis, Acis and Galatea is a love triangle involving the nymph Galatea, the shepherd Acis, and the giant Polyphemus who threatens their happiness. The story unfolds through music that encompasses the joyful and the melancholic.
